Creating Handmade Pottery for Plants

Tips for Using Roji Pots

Roji Pots are designed for plants to be growing directly
inside them. For orchid pots with side openings, a light
layer of sphagnum moss prevents the loss of orchid bark
while the potting medium "settles".

Planters with bottom drainage holes will benefit by the
addition of an inch of pebbles or styrofoam "peanuts"
(not cornstarch peanuts which will dissolve in water!)
to further promote drainage after watering.

Will my plastic pot fit inside a Roji pot?
If the size is not listed on the bottom of your plastic pot,
measure its height and diameter (width across the top).
Our product descriptions include what size plastic
pot will fit inside the Roji pot.

Round Plastic Pots Are:
Standard
(height=width across the top)
Azalea (three-fourths as tall as it is wide across the top)

   Taking Care of Your Pots

Roji's stoneware pots are ruggedly-built to be
used and re-used. Follow the easy cleaning
and sterilizing (recommended for orchids) process
shown here. These instructions are included in
shipment of your order.

We provide a clear plastic saucer with each orchid pot
and planter which will allow you to place your specimen
onto any fine furniture surface without the risk of water
damage.

                We do not recommend

  • using chlorine bleach to sterilize Roji pots.

  • placing Roji pots into boiling water.

  • placing Roji pots into a microwave oven.

  • placing Roji pots into a pre-heated oven.

  • placing a hot Roji pot into cold water.

  • using Roji pots for food or beverages.

To Clean and Sterilize Roji Pots

1. Soaking the entire pot in water for several
minutes will make fragile roots more pliable and easier to remove from the pot.

2. Place a protective layer of toweling in your
sink as you remove any remaining organic material
from a used pot by scrubbing with a steel wool-type
pad. Set the wet pot aside to dry overnight.

3. The next day, place your Roji pot, with its rim
facing down, in your cold oven (not pre-heated)
on the center rack. Set your oven temperature to
350 F. and "bake" the pot for one hour. Turn the
oven off, and let the pot cool to room temperature
on its own.
